Department of History
The Department of History, established in 1980, functions as a combined department of History and Political Science. It offers a regular programme, B.A. History (Model I) with Archaeology in India as Choice based Course, Introducing Environmental History as Open Course and Economics and Political Science as Complementary Courses. The Department offers two complementary courses, Social Formations in Pre Modern India and History of the Freedom Movement in India.
The curriculum of the Department of History is broad-based and liberal. An attempt is made to engage students with multiple perspectives on various historical themes and to enable them to analyze those perspectives critically. The exploration of past issues and of historical processes help students acquire necessary tools to tease out the underlying socio-political significations of the present and the past, of the mundane as well as the extraordinary.
Throughout the academic session, experts from various fields of History as well as related disciplines are regularly invited to make presentations in College so as to let the students and the faculty engage with the best and the latest in social scientific research. The History program will enrich your academic career and give you the valuable skills and methods of inquiry, analysis and synthesis that help you enlighten yourself and lead the society to a better world.
Since travel is an important way to learn and experience history, a couple of guided tours to places of historical importance form part of the annual calendar of the History Department.
The Department conducts various events round the year that make campus life vibrant and colourful. They include comprehensive, focused and complementary learning strategies - such as annual intercollegiate history Quiz called Vid Bharath, Heritage exhibitions, Workshops, Student seminars, etc.
